J.J. C. Smart was an English mathematician who played a key role in the development of set theory and the first-order predicate calculus. His father, John, was the master of Trinity College, Cambridge; his mother, Margaret, was the sister of John Napier of Merchiston Castle fame
He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1902 under the supervision of Charles Sanders Peirce and served as lecturer at the University of Michigan from 1910 to 1934, where he developed many ideas that would become important to his later work on logic and set theory.
